Handmade Denim Jeans: Baste & Gather's Birkin Flares

I made my first-ever pair of denim jeans. I have been wanting to make jeans for so long, but have been waiting to find a pattern that I thought would be successful. I stumbled upon Baste + Gather's 'Birkin Flares' and saw how many beautiful versions of these pants were popping up on Instagram and I had a good feeling about it!

I have a 28" waist and a 38" hip, and I read lots of reviews that said the pants fit accurately. After having completed them, I am SO HAPPY with how they fit. I took them in a bit through the knee to the hem because they were too large in the knee, and the flare was just a hair too much for my liking. In the future, the only other alteration I would make would be to curve the waistband a bit to make up for the big sway in my lower back.

The denim I used is beautiful stuff, and can be purchased here

Lauren's directions for installing the pockets, waistband, yoke, and fly were so clear and easy to follow. I used denim-specific top stitching and I can't even believe how professional they look! All I have left to do is install rivets.

I think they're just vintage-y enough, flattering and I love the fact that people can't believe they're handmade. Just goes to show what beautiful things we can make all on our own!

Have you made jeans? What pattern did you use? Have you made these specifically? Please share!

  1. Well done! These look fabulous. Jeans is on my to-do list, I haven't had the courage yet! I think I'm going to use the Ginger Jeans pattern, it seems super popular.
