1940's Jerkin from Vintage Plaid Wool

Happy weekend everyone!

Since I've been making so many things out of wool plaid lately (like this skirt, this tunic, and this other skirt) I figured I'd just run with it and share something else out of wool plaid. I'm goin' all the way with this theme.

I made this jerkin during a short stint in college when I was confused about my life path and enrolled in an Intermediate Garment Construction course. I wish I had stayed in the class, I learned so much in the first two weeks! I don't know what I was thinking when I decided it "Wasn't for me." Come on, 17-year-old Hannah, get your act together, girl.

I have scoured the internet for the pattern I used to make this, and I cannot find it. The paper pattern is in my storage unit back in California and I'm so sorry that I can't share the exact number with you. It was from the 1940's and consisted of a knife-pleat skirt, saddle stitched blouse and the jerkin. It may have bene Du Barry or Hollywood, or Simplicity. It looks very similar to many of the patterns that come up under this search, but lo, it is none of those exactly.

The wool fabric is vintage and was purchased from The Tin Thimble. They don't have that exact one anymore, but they always have a good selection of vintage wool plaid.

I love this jerkin. It fits wonderfully, and it was a great way to use, and highlight, buttons. It's comfy over button-up blouses or t-shirts. It's light enough to layer under jackets, but warm enough to not need one.  If you can find a similar pattern, I'd highly suggest making one. It would look so great with slacks for work, or with jeans for running errands.

Have you checked out my sewing tutorials, or my series "Sewcabulary" yet? If you're a new to sewing be sure to head over there to read them. They're chock-full of helpful advice, pictures and descriptions.

Don't forget to subscribe to this little blog of mine so you never miss an article! (You can do that over there, on the right, under "Bloglovin'" or "Subscribe by Email"...)

Thanks for reading and have a lovely weekend!

  2. Thanks Hannah, I saw a similar Jerkin for teen, it's a Du Barry Perfect pattern 5425. These patterns are expensive with taxe. I just start drawing a pattern but I am not very sure of the result. But I like so much this jerkin as I like fitted clothes. If the result is not to bad, it's promised, I'll show you.
Thank you for your blog, I appreciate your style.
Sincerely. Take a very good day. (My English is not perfect, I hope my sew will be better)
